New comment by omnimus in "EU to fund bug bounty programs for open-source projects"

It is called the long tail. PHP is only language with okay CMSs. The reason for it is the hosting model. It is easy way how to give someone package of files and they can buy their own managed hosting, put the files there and they have website.

Its all the tiny businesses restaurants, schools, fan sites. Sites with 5 visitors a day. Probably like 50% of web is this.

You can hate PHP all you want but there is no tech that does this better (maybe serverless one day). And PHP cmses are in completely different league compared to anything else unfortunately. Things like Craft, Kirby, Bolt or even Wordpress nothing unfortunately compares.

Of course people here are gonna hate on it and i hate PHP as much as anyone but when you are living from making websites for 500eur and you need to make 3 a month then it is hard to beat.

New comment by the_duke in "EU to fund bug bounty programs for open-source projects"

PHP is used for a massive amount of software out there.

I hate the language as much as anyone (probably more since I had to work with it extensively), but that doesn't change the above fact.

From Wordpress and Drupal to countless custom websites and apps built with Laravel or Symfony, this is a very worthwhile area to invest this money in.

Regardless of how much you don't like PHP.

New comment by samsolomon in "Jean Bourgain"

The "pingbacks" are common on WordPress blog using WordPress comments. As you mentioned they simply appear when another website provides a backlink.

This is default behavior, but most disable it.

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: How can I make the most out of high school?

Ask HN: How can I make the most out of high school?
9 by TheAsprngHacker | 7 comments on Hacker News.
I'm in high school. Soon, I will be in college. Before, I’ve focused mainly on studying and pursuing solitary passions, but not doing social activities. However, I now feel that I'm missing out on typical teenager life, and I'll have regrets when I'm an adult. I just watched an anime following a group of close friends in a band as they pass through high school. I've seen people online state that the anime reminded them of their own high school lives, but it doesn't remind me of my current life at all; it's way too carefree and fun. My online friends have told me that they don't have close friends either, so my life is normal. Today, I saw this: http://bit.ly/2SrB9oN. Granted, the person is saying that they don't relate to looking back on high school. However, the topic is about common things that one can’t relate to, and some repliers said that their own HS lives were carefree. Now, I again feel I am missing something. I like programming, and I've become interested in type theory. I doubt that other people in my school care about this stuff. I take art class, but it's a solitary activity between me and my teacher, not together with other students. I don't know how to make close friends. I can talk to people, but I can't suddenly form a close relationship with somebody. Friendship can’t be forced; it develops naturally. Yet, I've never made a close, loyal friendship, only casual friendships. Before, I've been looking forward to college so I can study my interests. Now, I feel afraid of ending high school. Is it normal that I don't have close friends and that I'm solitary? Am I missing out on anything? What hobbies do you advise me to adopt that I can do in a group, with camaraderie? Will college be the same or different than high school? Can I have the same kind of youthful fun when I'm an adult?

Ask HN: How can I make the most out of high school?

New comment by scarecrowbob in "PHP + Ajax scripts or the modern ecosystem dilemma"

Yeah, I agree.

But the WordPress "Community" has a lot of peculiarities that are unique to that system.

New comment by scarecrowbob in "PHP + Ajax scripts or the modern ecosystem dilemma"

Yeah, if you want to use the tools you need to use the tool chain.

On the other hand, I work with a whole lot of other peoples' WordPress projects. A lot of folks just crap some CSS wherever they can find a spot and call it done.

FWIW, I'd rather troubleshoot someone's gulpfile than dick around with a 4K line CSS file. But that's my choice and I know plenty of folks who pay their bills and would rather grep (well, they don't use grep because they don't know the CLI) and who love a monolithic CSS file.

I like the tools, some folks don't. But they aren't inherently bad tools, they are just not right for everything.

Thanks! Feel free to shoot me an email (address in profile) if you have any questions. In terms of retirement, I have been able to fund my wife's and my retirement accounts each year. I think the biggest challenge of being solo is that you really have to stick with it for a good 2 years to understand the ebb and flow of the business. Sometimes it looks like you make a lot less money but when you factor in all of the benefits of being a business, it all pans out.

I will also add that I am mostly a PHP dev and I do not work with WordPress at all. There is a LOT of work out there, though.

This will get me down-voted. But anyway:

I believe the welfare state can be a good thing. Some social network that gets you back on your feed. On the other hand, Portugal has very little welfare and government hand-outs. Because of this, Portugal has one of the lowest migration of Muslim "refugees". I prefer people who bring value as an immigrant to a country. The father of the guy who made the Strasbourg terrorists attack has been living on 5400 Euros a month welfare payments. I don't need this. https://ns2017.wordpress.com/2018/12/22/5400-euros-dallocati...

Laravel or vanilla PHP backend.

But I'm keeping some of my projects on WP, and will continue to update them. There are many reasons why Wordpress is great. Just that now I'm free to use any kind of backend... In 2018 I also worked with Node.js and Firebase, but currently for the server side I prefer PHP.

I love to joke that cloud functions are just PHP shared hosts that support node, go, etc as opposed to PHP, Perl etc. It is a bit of an exaggeration, of course, but fun to joke about.

I agree completely. The tranactional nature of that shared hosting era made hosting an application or website orders of magnitude cheaper and easier and led to an absolute boom of open source solutions like Wordpress. I hope to see some standardization across the serverless ecosystem to allow a similar situation as opposed to the lock-in approach taken by AWS and other cloud platforms.

To be fair there are people far more of an expert to provide guidance on postgres tuning, but here is a slide share (near top google result) I have used for some high write ideas: https://www.slideshare.net/GrantMcAlister/tuning-postgresql-... . Not advocating everything said there, but it has quality points to utilize.

The idea, is for example on high write loads, I don't really need to index for read, and indexes in general will cause slower writes in any SQL system. In addition I might choose different types of disk to store data on depending on durability and load. High write, SSD optimized (with high IOPS) for write and lower durability is probably ideal, yet for high reliability needs, high durability magnetic slower disks is likely a better choice. Stuff like that makes a huge difference, in fairness AWS (and other cloud providers) make it easy to make the choice today, but it makes a huge difference in performance capabilities and so many people don't understand the details of the selection they make.

This also leads us to adjusting the parameters for the Postgres install, which of course if you use RDS or similar you are more limited on, but it is still critical to weigh.

If you have questions in specific I am happy to try and help or I will ask one of my teammates to respond that has more specific knowledge. As an example, my consulting team a few years back scaled a Wordpress install using MySQL to millions of requests but did so using EC2 instead of RDS and used way less resources because we tuned the database and queries to be efficient for the hardware. It goes back to the old adage, for a 10x increase in hardware, there is likely a 100x increase in software if you just look. Our client at the time kept upgrading the hardware on AWS to the next larger instance for RDS, and we instead moved off RDS to EC2 and then tuned the instance and MySQL install to be more efficient for their specific workload. Obviously highly tailored to their specific use case but we saved them a HUGE amount of money and still provided the same scalability and reliability.

If someone has hitched their entire career to one particular software then it's their responsibility to stay abreast of the changes that the developers of that software introduce.

> a whole lot of of folks who have been doing a lot of work with PHP who didn't want to learn that toolchain.

Those people are not entitled to learn one thing and then be able to get work forever, the wordpress technical leadership (i.e. the ones who actually work on the core software day to day and make the technical decisions) are making changes that they feel enhance the product or make it easier to maintain, if a particular wordpress developer has a problem with that then they can either choose to support only the old versions or just learn something new. The other option is to work on some other PHP software that isn't making changes.

Interesting, I knew they had a new editor, since I have a few WordPress blogs, but I only use them, I don't code anything with them, so I hadn't considered how they're rewritten. I don't mind when SPA is used properly, and in this case it only affects one specific use case which makes a lot of sense.

I'm not totally sure about the context for the OP, but just recently there are a lot of folks doing low-end PHP dev work for WordPress, and many of them are now having to learn React because WordPress has changed its backend editor to a system that is based around React.

Personally, I think that this is a good choice-- the editor system in that CMS is a very good use case for complex JS technologies.

But at the same time, there are a whole lot of of folks who have been doing a lot of work with PHP who didn't want to learn that toolchain.

In that context, it's a little complex: we have a whole ecosystem of businesses and developers and software tooling that is being pushed over by some core changes. I'd bet that there are going to be a lot of frustrated low-end PHP devs dragged into learning modern-ish JS tooling.

I think anyone who wants to explore the world of programming should do so, but I don't agree with this article. I fit the demographic that this article is talking about. I taught myself JavaScript for years, taught it to others and I currently work part time at a cloud technology start up and part time teaching online with another company. The reality is that contrary to the hype the truth is that it takes a long time for your mind to adapt to thinking in code. Learning programming is not something that most people can do in a year or even two. Basic programming? Yes, maybe. Basic Wordpress development? Maybe. But keep in mind for modern front-end development you are also talking about the DOM, async, frameworks like React and a hodge podge of things that can easily drown developers who have been working in the field for decades. I once had a bio-chem student who was extremely smart and had A's in his advanced math classes. No matter how much we tried to work through it he could not get his head around DOM programming. I went out of my way to try an help him but eventually he decided it just wasn't enjoyable and he dropped the course. I've also had many students that have assumptions about the attainability of this stuff that make my jaw drop. I've worked with online bootcamps that treat students soley as customers and instructors as pseudo-guru's that are expected to keep the student "happy". If the student complains because the instructor gave them a reality check - the onus is on the instructor. I do believe that most people can do more than what they perceive, but this article is not promoting a perception that I think is beneficial.

Yes. I found this to be unbelievable.

Let’s say bad-admin uses an out of date Wordpress or join pa instance with some security flaw. Am I really to beleive in 2 years he keeps using the same instance every time his site is taken down?

That seems extremely unlikely.

If your hian site is taken down by some guy in London, you’re going to wonder how; and probably assume it was some bad code on your end.

Dude keeps using the same code and keeps wondering how his site keeps getting hacked - yet, knows enough to work SEO, get a guy SEATed, run an anonymous darkwrv site, and handle crypto payments?

Sure seems odd.

New comment by gregjor in "Ask HN: Advice for an aging software developer?"

I work through an agency now, so my typical client is a small or medium-size business that can’t hire or doesn’t need a full-time programmer or system admin. Usually they’ve been burned by outsourcing and gig sites and want someone who will take the time to understand their business, not just a coder who requires detailed specs and then beats them up with change orders.

I got my first freelancing gig more than ten years ago, while working f/t at an educational software company that was slowly going under. A friend I had worked with put me in touch with a friend of hers who had a successful web design/marketing agency, and he had clients who needed programming work (back end) that he couldn’t do. He started sending me work and then referred me to other design/marketing firms who needed the same kind of thing. If I was starting out today knowing what I know I would approach design/marketing agencies because they find the customers and frequently outsource anything beyond HTML/CSS or installing a Wordpress theme. Before long I connected with a company with a successful web-based business who had lost their developers (an outside firm that broke up and quit the client with short notice). I took that over. About the same time I gave a talk at a PHP user group about working with legacy code and got a job at the end when a guy who ran a non-profit approached me, telling me how his developer had quit and he had a long list of bugs and enhancements. I still work for both of those companies.

To get clients you need to tell everyone you know that you’re available, not get too fussy about what kind of work you do, focus on business requirements and needs rather than technology. Most important: listen to and communicate with your clients. The number one complaint I hear from my clients is that their last developer stopped returning calls and emails. Don’t pigeonhole yourself, recognize that languages and frameworks and tools are more alike than not, take on work that will push you a little. In the last couple of years I’ve gone from knowing nothing about AWS to managing cloud infrastructure for several companies, with some help from a friend who has a Linux/cloud security consulting practice.

My background is in enterprise logistics and business (accounting, payroll, AR/AP, etc.), so heavy on relational databases. I have worked in non-software businesses long enough to know the difference between a business problem or requirement and a technical problem. I don’t care much about languages or shiny new things, because my clients usually don’t. They want to fix bugs, reduce costs, increase revenue, scale their business. No business ever had the requirement “We need 2,000 more lines of Javascript code by next month” or “Let’s rewrite our web app with React because it’s cool.”

I get your point about good code vs. bad code, but in my experience that doesn’t have much to do with legacy vs. modern frameworks. It has to do with the skills and aesthetics of the original developer. I work on framework-based code (Laravel, etc.) that I don’t find very enjoyable, and I work on procedural PHP from ten years ago that I find easy to work on.

Programmers who focus on their own enjoyment or priorities like working with the most recent tools and frameworks will turn up their nose at less appealing legacy work, and that’s why there’s so many companies unable to hire people to work on their business systems and web sites. To some developers an older code base is just a turd, to others it’s an opportunity. After working with a legacy system for a while and incrementally refactoring it, if my client decides to rewrite it they will talk to me rather than sending out RFPs. I have two ground-up rewrites in progress right now that started as legacy support work. Those clients didn’t write RFPs or ask anyone else to bid on the work.

I agree that learning Wordpress, or anything, takes time. Wordpress certainly has some bad design decisions (mainly caused by maintaining compatibility with a huge installed base), and some ugliness to work around, but on the other hand WP has a large and mature developer community, good documentation, and lots of tools and add-ons.

Frameworks will eventually turn most jobs we do now into low-skill office jobs. Maybe not WordPress 6.0, but WordPress 10.0 certainly will be easy enough for just about anybody to use. We won't call them programmers, but they'll be doing all the jobs we used to do, if we're lucky enough to have moved up.

Just how like tasks that used to be done by doctors are now done by nurses, and tasks that used to be done by lawyers are now done by increasingly large staffs of paralegals and secretaries, coding will eventually be stratified like everything else. I would argue it's more inevitable in this one than it ever was in those fields.

> Upload the WordPress files to the desired location on your web server

Yes, this is how you'd generally install /anything/ on a server. Whether it's Java/Ruby/Go/etc. You copy/install the files where they need to go so that the server can execute them. Sometimes an installer will do this for you (ie, `go get`), but sometimes you have to do it yourself even then, just because you have a non-standard install.

> there is still a ton of existing PHP apps which rely on being able to modify their own code.

Yes, WordPress is very stateful. It's pretty annoying. However, simply revoking write permissions to the filesystem is pretty straightforward. This (generally) will keep you amazingly safe from most simple exploits. Running WordPress in a stateless way is not that difficult.

By "developer experience" I meant the equivalent of "user experience", ie whether the codebase is enjoyable to work with.

IMO it would still require them to get familiar with Wordpress before being able to get the good jobs, which means he's going to be stuck with crap gigs for some time while he builds references.
