Ask HN: TDD: What are your thoughts on it? Do you use it?
At my previous job, I fought hard to introduce TDD. Neither me or my team was experienced, so I thought "let's introduce TDD, because it will reduce the possibilities of deploying buggy code".
Unfortunatley, it did not catch that much interest in my colleagues.
Now, I don't expect TDD to save us code completely, but I think that the fact that it forces you to think before doing and provides a test bed that you constantly use to make sure what you do doesn't break what you are sure worked before is a great thing.
Fast forward to today. I was talking to a potential employer (start up) and he told me they don't use TDD becase they don't find it efficient for the team at the moment, although he mentioned he'd like to bring it in the company the future.
Is TDD usually a practice is bigger, more structured companies? Do you use TDD? What are your thoughts on it? Do you work in a startup or a big company?
Last: what is the alternative?

I've been blogging for 7 years using Wordpress (hosted, with my name as the domain name). It's been a great experience, and I wish I had started earlier. I don't feel any pressure to blog every week or every month, but over the years the content has built up anyway. At an interview recently, I was asked several questions (e.g. What makes a great programmer, What are the most important lessons you have learnt) for which I could point to blog posts I had written.
I've written about my experience blogging here: https://henrikwarne.com/2017/11/26/6-years-of-thoughts-on-pr...

Ask HN: How many screens in your workspace?
We are having a discussion about workspaces. We are running 27" iMacs, and although it's possible to have multiple screens I think that one screen with better "window management" to ensure the real estate is used as well as it can be, would be better than 2 screens and having the "neck twist" of moving between the two.
What does your screen setup look like?

New top story on Hacker News: Launch HN: Trexo Robotics (YC W19) – Robotic Legs for Kids with Cerebral Palsy
106 by manmeet | 14 comments on Hacker News.
Hi HN community! We're Rahul and Manmeet, co-founders of Trexo Robotics ( http://bit.ly/2vuDyoN ) At Trexo Robotics, we're building wearable robotic devices to help children with disabilities learn to walk, in many cases for the first time in their lives. Video: https://youtu.be/3LW4LJIpa2o We are both Mechatronics undergrads from the University of Waterloo. Rahul later completed a Master's in Robotics at the University of Toronto and I've done my MBA at Rotman. We started this a few years ago when I (Manmeet) found out that my nephew, Praneit, has Cerebral Palsy, and that he would not be able to walk. Not walking can lead to contractures, hip subluxation, and many physiological and psychological issues for kids. We wanted to change that. We decided to use our robotics background, along with help from friends and the top rehabilitation researchers in North America, and in 2016, watched my nephew take his first steps using our device. Watching Praneit walk is definitely the proudest moment of my life, and we realized that there are families all over the world that can benefit from this, so we started Trexo Robotics. The Trexo device is available for $899 per month (via financing) or can be purchased outright for $29,900. It is an exercise and therapy tool, allowing children to get the benefits of daily walking at their homes. We decided to design it so that it attaches onto an existing walker. Currently, it only works with Rifton's Dynamic Pacer, but hopefully, we can add other walkers later on as well. Our controller allows you to modify the gait pattern to adapt to the needs of different kids and adjust the amount of force/assistance that the robot provides on each joint. We are already launched, with kids using it to walk thousands of steps daily. It has been amazing to see the interest of families. Our device is available for pre-order. Our 2019 production is already fully reserved, and we are now taking reservations for next year. Really interested to hear the HN community's thoughts on our approach, and experiences families or others have had in this space.

What top keywords to highlight in a privacy policy for quicker reading?
I used to ignore privacy policies. Clicked "I accept" and moved on. But then I started to care about my privacy. I tried to take a minute to read and understand each privacy policy, but there where too many words to skim through.
I started working on an open-source tool to automatically highlight important keywords and action words in policy documents. Hovering over each highlighted word told you what you can expect in that section.
It's not 100% perfect but it has improved my readability of every privacy policy and terms of service.
I would like to improve the list of keywords and actions words to highlight. Maybe even add a new section to highlight.
What top privacy policy keywords and action words am I missing in this Git config?

Thanks. But: I am suggesting you add clarity for other visitors to your site so you don't lose them because they think $100 and "it might disappear next year + tough shit no refund" is the only option.
By the way your offering fills a certain niche that I am interested in. That is the niche where a technical person like myself wants to design a site using HTML & CSS in text editor (how else would you do it!) but there is another nontechnical person who wants a nicer editor to edit the content. In addition I want a fast and cheap CDN type of offering. Netlify is what I use now, but it means I have to make the wording changes which sucks.
I imagine this is a common situation for small time website developers. For example if I make a site for the local pizza delivery, they might need to change their menu, but it is good if they can do it directly. But I like to host it as a static site so I know it is less likely to get hacked or be slow, and I can back it up more easily (looking at you Wordpress+MySQL+Bunch of PHP files called plugins).

New comment by CM30 in "Open Source Is Eternal"
Given many programmers got their careers started by making plugins, themes and sites using open source CMS systems, I'd say those won pretty handily. If you've ever used WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, MediaWiki, Magento, phpBB etc for a project, you've benefited from open source.
Same goes with anyone who used open source programming/scripting languages. The likes of PHP and Python are open source, as are Ruby, JavaScript, C/C++ and even now Java.
Hell, it's probable web development wouldn't exist with anywhere near as much of popularity if most basic components of it weren't open source.
Does that mean some people can't make much like they used to? Sure. But it also means a lot more people can make a living at all.
And given the salaries of many developers/programmers, it's a lot better as a situation than the one journalism is in right now. Or the ones involving creative fields like art, music, media, game development, etc, where the top 0.01% make money and the rest kinda struggle.

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: Are you put off building something because it already exists?

Big market, check. Validated demand, check. Product or service exists, uh-oh. I set out to build a reverse address book. Instead of updating your address book with changes from everyone else, you update your own details and it pushes to everyone else. Turns out someone beat me to it and my inspiration evaporated. Zoom is a recent and great example of competing in a crowded market and winning. For you builders/founders out there, are you on a never ending quest to find something new/unique or do you prefer another quality in your idea to start a project?

Ask HN: What do you do for global warming?
After a lot of discussions with my girlfriend about global warming we are still wondering what we can do to help fight the problem.
Some Background: There's evidence [0] that we will reach a point of no return regarding the climate change soon. Reaching this tipping point implies we create a self-reinforcing feedback loop where the whole 'Earth System' becomes destabilized which in turn leads to an increase in temperature of up to 50° in the next 100 years. See [3].
We think its clear there is reason to act now. There's some 'simple' points one can personally do to help:
* no flights * use public transport * use less energy * buy local groceries * cut back on dairy products
However, the largest impact on climate does not come from e.g. flights [1] but from the energy industry. One can only impact this indirectly.
Lots of the general public (including politics) seems to be oblivious to the problem at hand - ignoring the problem fully or at least partly. With Fridays for future [2] there is (at least in Germany) work done in this regard. At the same time it has just been decided there won't be a tempo limit on german autobahns and no CO2-emission tax.
It looks like the best might be to improve education on the topic - but it has to happen fast. If more people try to reduce their emissions it might force the 'bigger forces' to reduce their emissions, too.
This whole topic has a very negative ring to it - "Life is probably over in 50 years" is not something everyone wants to be confronted with. At the same time everyone has to acknowledge this and has to react accordingly.
So, really, I'd like to spark a discussion what one can do, what has been done and what you are doing. Also, what can give hope :) ?
tldr; We are fucked, what can we do?

New comment by drorco in "Ask HN: Sources of remote dev work with minimal human interaction?"
I'm one of the founders of a company that fosters a network of coders and this was one of its main ideas when we founded it - minimize the amount of communication overhead and allow coders to focus just on coding. Practically, you're getting assigned with Asana tasks that you tackle one after the other. Naturally, you can't avoid communication at at all but if you want, you can limit it to communicating pull-requests/scoping/QA etc.
Normally I wouldn't solicit people to sign up on HN, but since you asked for sources I figured I'll take the opportunity to help fulfill your search: https://www.codersclan.com/, if you sign up, mention you are the poster from HN and I'll make sure to speed the process up for you. Do note that the hourly rates start from $30/hour and that right now we're mostly looking for WordPress or front-end devs.
Another source you might want to look at is https://remote.co/ I think we even advertised there in the past, but naturally the type of work you'll get will depend on the contract you land.

Show HN: Rapidmail – extremely simple transactional email sending
Hi all,
I just released the first version of rapidmail, a simple Python library that lets you generate and send transactional emails with the minimum of fuss: https://github.com/chris104957/rapidmail
Rapidmail lets you send messages with an extremely simple Python one-liner: rapidmail.send_mail('# Hello, world!', 'subject', ['christopherdavies553@gmail.com'])
Where this differs from using something like the AWS SES CLI is that rapidmail supports markdown syntax and placeholder insertion right out of the box.
Rapidmail actually uses the Maildown API - a startup that I posted about here a few weeks ago. You can see that post here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19590646
Thanks for looking Chris
