Firstly, the idea is inspired by the “UBER for X” analogy prominent in startups 5-8 years ago: Others get your dog groomed in 15 minutes. We get you a social worker.

Secondly, it is a reaction to the Covid denier movement in Germany. The protests literally look like clown parades. Maybe the government has to adjust?

Lastly, I don’t like that clown emojis are basically a trolling tool on Twitter now. I am a fan of humor. That’s why I wanted to leave a positive note.

I am not sure it would make a good startup. There is nothing proprietary – everybody can copy it and I am totally fine with that. Good jokes are meant to be told.

Maybe it is an idea to turn it into a Spinal Tap-like mockumentary. It could be epic scenes: Hundreds of clowns going from door to door to help.

This is a pitch I wrote during the last lockdown. Since German brand humor is currently is high in demand, I decided to share it today.

Ask HN: Home schooled boys got elective approval to work on crypto

Really frustrated. We home school our boys. They will be in 6th grade next sept. The school believes they are 2 grades ahead of their peers in math and science. They are bored. We submitted a proposal to teach the basics of crypto and stock trading. They wrote a paper for the school for why they should be able to study what they have interest in. We were denied 3x, but finally got approved after a recent school committee hearing... provided I follow guideline which are basically meaningless. My boys know php+ python, Go, rust, obj-c and learning solidity. Their first assignment is to create an Erc20 SMART CONTRACT to do whatever they want. FROM STEP 1. Does YouTube have a step by step tutorial on how a basic contract is made so they can learn with hacking which is what the do or do I need to buy a book on Amazon. I’ve been in crypto since 2012. I own crypto but I need to be supportive of their elective. Any tips links resources.

Ask HN: Is public praise a worthwhile quest?

Managers are frequently asking how we like to be shown appreciation. My general sense is that from a corporation which lacks emotion or psychology of any kind, the only real expression of appreciation is in payment. As such, the public praise thing has always seemed to me to be a diversion to distract from the fact that you’re not really getting a raise. Maybe I am wrong though — is there any actual value in public praise over, say private praise?

Ask HN: How would I use a proglang to simulate a system with interaction?

For instance, a predator-prey systems between predator species X and prey species Y. There is a birthing process where two Y's of opposite gender meet together and have children. There is a predation process where an X eat Y's. And maybe some others.

I thought "maybe an object oriented language would be good for this." So I created Predator & Prey classes. But then when it came to instantiating the objects it quickly became stupid. What am I supposed to do to model the ACTUAL OBJECTS themselves? Two ArrayLists one with m predators and n prey? A two-dimensional array with Predator and Prey objects dispersed randomly and moving stepwise?

How do you model simple INTERACTION between objects?

Steve Yegge Sucks

I have come to the realization that Steve Yegge sucks. Early in my career I idolized the guy for his blog posts, and I played Wyvern in middle school and loved it - but the guy's twitter activity, and some of his writings I came accross recently paint him as a mean, arrogant, hypocritical, exclusionary, human-rights-not-giving-a-fuck-about societally clueless shitty tech person stereotype.

He's recently taken to loving hard on Amazon, check out this tweet: https://twitter.com/Steve_Yegge/status/1371572461624463360 . I guess in his old age and wealth, he forgot that he hated it when he worked there because of how they treat people.

In his recent tirades against Google, he focuses on one thing and one thing only - market dominance and bottom line. He keeps going out against Google because they "aren't innovating anymore" and "have grown fat and lazy" and looks jealously at Amazon and all of the "innovation" they have. Anyone familiar with Amazon knows that they are not a smart company. They take the good ideas and innovations of other companies, organize them well from a business perspective, and exploit their workers maximally to scale their business and achieve market dominance. What Steve Yegge is endorsing when he endorses Amazon is their ability to take other people's ideas and turn them into engines of exploitation of engineers and warehouse workers. He doesnt care about any of Amazon's human rights abuses. He doesn't care about any of Google's human rights abuses either - he only cares about these corporations ability to exploit people for profit.
