This is something I've been grappling with for a while as I have started considering looking for a new job.
I've been working at one of the big 5 (do we still call them that?) for the past 5 years and it seems that every company in the industry, large or small, has not only escalated the whiteboard hazing rituals, but entered in to a full-on arms race where the difficulty of problems one can expect has spiraled out of control and become a game of "we both know you memorized this solution but let's pretend you're coming up with it from first principles wink".
At the time, I also had copious amounts of free time with which to spend hours each day grinding leetcode problems online.
Not only do I not have that time any more, I don't have the inclination to do so. Spending 20 (or more!) additional hours each week doing nothing but solving algorithm problems sounds like an egregious waste of time.
And grind problems I would otherwise have to - my day-to-day is focused on delivering quality software and leading a team, I haven't had to write an algorithm to invert a binary tree, or find triplets in an array that satisfy a geometric sequence once.
Even recruiters seem to be getting in on the action themselves. I recently spoke with a recruiter at another of the big 5, and, during the initial conversation, they started asking basic questions such as "which of these algorithms is O(nlogn)". After answering a few of them I politely told them I was no longer interested and ended the conversation.
At this point I think I've come to terms that my only real options are remain where I'm at until the end of my career (and if I ever get fired or laid off I don't know what I'll do), or go back to school and pursue a different career in a field that respects people and trusts them.
I just don't see the industry changing for the better here. If anything, it has gotten significantly, noticeably, horrifically worse since I was last engaged in this process.

The links to comments, posts and the various too nav are super hard to hit accurately on my phone. Would any admin be open to implementing an improved UI for smaller viewports? I’d gladly donate the time to implement it, if that’s of any benefit?

Most of the posts here on HN are links to pages on other web sites. How do I find pages featuring particular words among these?
E.g. I'd like to find an article on digital signal and processing which probably had the words like "signal" and "filter" in its text but all I can remember about the title used on HN is that it probably didn't feature either.

What about astronomy, cosmology, archeology, paleontology, volcanology, evolutionary biology, cladistics, macroeconomics, etc., which do not allow us to "repeat and predict," as you say?
Some of these cases can be rescued by considering "retrodiction"[1][2] as valid substitute for prediction in the right circumstances, but not all.
I personally think the analysis of the Mott problem[3] points the way to the solution to some of these kinds of issues. That is, a prediction can take the form of a likelihood function which assigns high probabilities to certain combinations of events and low probabilities to others. Theories with low perplexity[4] can be considered correct even if they can't make predictions, and the study of such theories can be scientific. But as far as I know I am the only one who thinks so.

Big fan of static site generators and the whole JAMStack idea in general - use Jekyll for all My sites, but after building a site with Gatsby, it felt too over-engineered.
React is great, and definitely has its place, but to set up React, GraphQL and all the surrounding tooling just to assemble some text files into a template felt like complexity for the sake of it.
For me, the fun of static sites - after years of building sites with CMSs like Wordpress and Drupal - is that they’re as close as possible to plain HTML, lightning-fast and very simple.
The real play must be to take a chunk out of medium right? “Companies that don’t like medium or Wordpress are rolling their own costly solutions, so here we are with the smooth transition”.
The problem is if they want to be profitable they will eventually have to incorporate the bad parts of medium and/or the bad parts of Wordpress and then we’re back to square one with some new minimal open source static site builder. This wheel is exhausting.
you can.. though, honestly, i'd advice against wordpress + gatsby. in my experience, because of various plugins required to do various things, the way media is fetched etc, and the highly difficult task of getting things working with schemas in wp.
also, wordpress builds tend to also take the longest.
if you enjoy hacking on wordpress and debugging weird issues, then this might be a good choice.
It's much easier to build a blog using prismic, contentful, or even the netlify cms kind of is nice for a basic "serverless" blog/cms.
honestly, i'd take markdown files in a bunch of folders any day over gatsby-source-wordpress.
Hi, I’m John. My co-founder Jada and I are helping people in the Midwest buy houses worth $80k or less through a shared ownership structure that enables residents to accrue protected equity in their homes with each monthly payment - https://ift.tt/2madkqy
Nearly 1 in 5 houses across the country are worth $80k or less. In many Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, this stock makes up 10-30% of the available housing (in South Bend, IN where we live, the median house value is $78k). But these houses are still inaccessible for a lot of working families who want to be home owners - instead, they typically end up renting the same housing and miss out on the primary way Americans build wealth.
what’s stopping people from buying these houses?
Banks aren’t interested in making mortgages below $80k due to their profit structure. When a bank makes a mortgage, the majority of its revenue comes from the fees it charges to originate, typically a percentage of the total loan value. But since many mortgages are sold to the secondary market (Fannie and Freddie), it costs the bank the same amount to make a $50k loan as it does a $500k loan. If they are servicing the loan for Fannie or Freddie they’ll earn a fraction of the interest, but how much money that equates to still depends on the size of the loan while again having fixed costs. So if it costs a bank at least $800 to make a mortgage, they’ll lose money on every loan they make worth less than $80k - https://ift.tt/2loWCU2
This is the problem we're solving with Hurry Home.
We work with individuals looking to make investments for passive cash flow while still making an impact on people’s lives. Investors can buy homes for as little as $25k and earn a predictable return.
Excited to share this and would love to know your thoughts and suggestions

When I last used it (years ago) there was a neat plugin that'd let you use it as a commenting system for a WordPress blog. Every blog post would get a new thread in a particular forum, and people could comment in both places.

I would love to see a startup sincerely own the logistics of bookkeeping. I would love to know some alternatives since my googling is not showing any decent contenders.
