Regular code-reviews are supposed to catch errors, bad style, or bad architectural decisions early on in the process. For it to work, however, everyone should be super disciplined and spend a lot of brain-power reading through each diff. Usually, it's really hard to dig into someone's code until you're fully int the cotext (read: working on the same piece of code). On the other hand, I often find myself in the situation when I'm dealing with someone else's code and think, "Oh god, how could I even approve this PR?". The next thing I usually want to do is let the team, and specifically, the code author, know that this is how we should NOT DO things. The problem, however, is that the code-review window has closed and there's no other standard place (besides GitHub PRs) to comment on the code.
I'm wondering if commenting on the code AFTER it has been merged is standard practice on some project and if there are any good tools for that.

I have interviews next week that I'm very nervous about. I'm excited about the job and know I can do it well. However, I know for a fact that it'll be a very long day of "tell me about a time when you failed" and "what's the worst thing your previous manager would say about you". After a day of that, it'll take a while to recover from the bad feelings, especially if the result is the usual ghosting.
Any advice how to deal best with this awfulness?

The comment expresses the view that the whole diamond thing is bollocks. It's just oddly melodramatic in my opinion and takes these wild swings that spam comments on my WordPress blog take.

I am using a 2015 15-inch MBP for a project and really need to bring it with me on a trip soon. But the FAA recently put out a warning/ban on these due to a battery recall, and some airlines are banning them from planes in various configurations.[1]
According to every news source, the only devices covered by the FAA order are serial numbers eligible for recall per Apple's support page. And the device I have at home isn't one of those. But... I really don't trust the TSA to be willing to type the serial number into a support page to verify that at the airport. It seems more likely that they'd just see the laptop and turn me away at security, which would be an expensive mess.
So, has anyone successfully flown with one of these that has a non-recalled serial number?

wordpress always felt really overkill for what i wanted, and static site gens are fun for people who like to tinker under the hood. personally i use hugo, but i am still shopping around for something a little less convoluted. stumbled onto a super old package called blazeblogger and it'a been neat, but we will see
when i just want something i can setup with minimal hassle, i have always loved GetSimple (http://get-simple.info/) although i imagine mentioning a flat-file platform will probably elicit some reactions - flat-file meaning it doesn't use a database to store content, but instead simply stores the data, encrypted, in actual textfiles on your webserver. when i was using godaddy as a host, their mysql db's were always a bit laggy, and something like wordpress would always have that extra, noticeable pause during loading that bugged me to no end. getsimple with the blogging plugin was always faster, configuring it was easy, and i didn't have to stray too far outside my limited knowledge of html/css/php to play with the styling and theming.

Excited to be in the community. My co-founder and I are launching a marketplace this year (too early to share), and initial feedback to idea has been positive. However, I don't know how to answer the question "What's your unfair advantage?". Did any of these companies initially have an unfair advantage: Airbnb, Twitter, Facebook? Their business models are relatively simple, and do not appear to be technically difficult (I'm non-technical).
Can the group share how they answer the question for their startup? Or an example of a good answer they've heard?

On the contrary, you’re now trying to ‘conflate’ the pay-to-publish model into the two you argued meant that model didn't exist.
You weren’t talking about paying cash for publishing/distribution, because both your two options, paid subscription and free ad-supported, you were talking how the consumer pays and also cost money to publish, cancelling that dimension out.
In the pay-to-publish model, someone is deciding it’s worth their own pocket money (or patronage or sponsorship by powers that be) to publish. That makes it free to consume.
We were talking about the perspective of the content consumer, and for them, the pay-to-publish model is free. They are neither paying for the content, nor are they paying with their attention. Some entirely different actor not discussed in your models, is covering it.
That content, content creators support publishing, tends to be different in nature — someone is willing to spend “their own” money to share the ideas in it freely.
Pamphleteers paid the printing presses by cash too, that’s how they didn’t have to sell ads and how they didn’t have to charge a ha’penny a sheet.
> “Content both created and distributed for free is miniscule and you haven’t quoted a single example yet”
You’re both non-responsive to examples with factual data to back them up, and moving the goalposts. To be clear, I’m agreeing there is too much no-value content getting churned out as filler to advertise against. So much volume, so much noise, the valuable content is buried.
Perhaps we agree there’s too much ad-hosting filler content, and not enough inherent value content.
To keep saying “minuscule” perhaps you use a very different internet. Where are the ads on this site? Are you paying for it? No, someone has an interest in this site and its content being available to a special interest audience. It costs almost nothing to host contentful content of mostly plain text conveying information rather than eye candy to drive clicks. With light design but info rich text content, it’s easy for the ROI to work. Companies know this and publish for free without ads.
If you add “corporate” publishing into the mix, all the company product sites and blogs, combining company sites, academic sites, non-profit/public-good sites, government sites, WordPress home pages of everyone homesteading on the web, etc., it’s not minuscule.
But here’s some hard data from 2018:
“Ad-supported media’s share of consumer time will drop to 42.5 percent by 2021. This past year [2017], the number fell to 44.4 percent, its lowest point ever, per the research.” — https://www.pqmedia.com/product/global-consumer-media-usage-...
Ad-supported is less than half of media time and trending down.
In the beginning, profiting off web content was illegal. Is it impossible to imagine course-correcting this race to the bottom?

Hello,
I am teaching a coding class (middle schoolers) and I have a specific need.
I am looking for a site/system where the site provides the shell of a board game / word game (assume rectangular board) and my students can fill in the game logic or write bots/programs playing against it.
Does such a thing exist?
I am not interested in site that already game-ify programming with their own game.
As an example, imagine a student needs to write a program that plays (or attempts to play), a board game like chess. Much of the grunt work of hosting a site, logic for new game, game rules, how to connect clients etc can be abstracted out and handled by the site.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi everyone! We need young people looking to work with an actual production codebase to help create experiences for article authors and editors.
The Journal
The Young Scientists Journal is a non-profit peer-reviewed science journal for under 21's. Completely staffed by young people (~200 editors, ~10 artists, ~2 devs).
Me
I joined the Young Scientists Journal when I was 15. I was the one of the first developers there, and I helped them move from their legacy Annotum stack to a semi-decent Wordpress setup. I also, more recently, wrote an Article Management System to handle all these incoming articles. I'll be turning 21 soon enough, so it's time to start looking for people who can take over the reins for the software I've been developing.
Role
Maintain the Article Management System
Help write front ends for submitting and managing articles
Help maintain the Wordpress website (Optional)
What we need from you
Be a young person
Have at least one project written in JavaScript
Be willing to learn TypeScript
Be willing to learn how to deploy TypeScript apps
Don't worry if any of that sounds intimidating. When I started, I hadn't seriously used a programming language before. The difference is, when you join, I'll be there to get you accustomed to working with this kind of codebase.
If you have any questions about the position, want to help with something different or even want to submit an article, leave a comment or send me a message.
Thanks to everyone for reading this!
from the YSJ!

Hi HN, I am Gilbert co-founder of TrafficChamp https://ift.tt/2HmbNp3 .
Traffic congestion costs the United States $3bn each year and a subset of that is people trying to look for parking. We own a car but after finally making it through traffic, another nightmare of looking for where to park kicks, and we spend money and lots of time looking for spots.
But what if you could instead exchange your car to another driver going somewhere and they return your car on-demand when you need it? That's why we are building Traffic Champ.
How it would work;
List your car on our site and we will find other car-owning drivers who are interested in using it Drivers pick exchange spots which they use to drop off there cars to other drivers and you simply go do whatever you want. In case you need your car back, you simply request it back. Feel free to reach out for any feedback or questions.
