You can try sites such as wix or strikingly which offer a wysiwyg editor and allow you to build your website without knowing the first thing about HTML. Saves you the hassle of hosting your own Wordpress or static pages (although S3 and others work great for that), will allow you to do some basic integration with G Analytics and so forth, and will take you all of 5 minutes to set up.

Honestly: I'd buy a good base design with WYSIWYG builder support.

Something like https://elementor.com/ for wordpress or even go straight for squarespace (not sure how expensive that is though).

I feel like we are finally at a point where you don't have to know CSS anymore for pretty static websites. At my job we are 50% devs, but marketing and design does the website all on their own with some wordpress builder plugin and it's alright.

New comment by Kagerjay in "Ask HN: What is the best way to quickly launch a website?"

There's really two main options

- Single static page (netlify as host or similar)

- Wordpress (sitegrounds as host)

If you want premade templates to just modify some images / cut out content, I would use themeforest

Specifically these links

https://themeforest.net/category/marketing/landing-pages?sor...

https://themeforest.net/category/marketing/unbounce-landing-...

Technically all you really want is an email signup link at the end

> a basic page that can host data and display a few bar charts and text (ideally in a UX pleasing way).

That sounds like a static site. Unless you need some interaction per user, I'd recommend buying a ready theme, adding the content and uploading that to S3. Ignore WordPress and frameworks unless you really have a need for them.

It's mostly static and cached content. Wordpress.com can serve orders of magnitude more traffic for free. Dreampress price is definitely not justified by the costs of resources.

New comment by keshab in "This blog has moved"

Scaling a blog is not a big of an issue these days. Even with Wordpress, caching and other optimizations should not be a hassle. There are also many other alternatives in the static-site realm.

Blogger is not as good an option as it was before. It was an attractive buy for google at the time of the acquisition. But now they have stopped using it even for their own blogs. I wouldn't be surprised if Google decides to shut down blogger in the near future.

New comment by arikrak in "This blog has moved"

It's understandable to want your own domain and control of your site. Wordpress is a good option but a self-hosted installation is not as reliable as using something like Blogger. With proper caching it should be able to handle a large number of visitors, but there's still security issues and the like that can affect it.

New comment by milesvp in "This blog has moved"

Yeah, that's mostly because wordpress is a dog. It really uses a lot of resources to serve the smallest of content. We use a CDN, a caching layer, and object caching in both wordpress and php, to make our site perform even half-way decently.

I'll throw in my recommendation for Ghost if others also want to move their blog to "a site they control and a company they pay":

https://ghost.org/

They provide paid hosted services, or you can self-host it as it's free and open source (https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost). Far better than wordpress. You write posts in Markdown. Editor is really nice.

Example blogs:

Their wordpress plan is super expensive. They have you pay per visitor, I recall looking into it some time ago for my personal blog and it was beyond $100 per month to support enough visitors for the HN front page.

New comment by lucideer in "Show HN: No More Google, privacy-friendly alternatives to Google products"

I haven't done due diligence and checked each one, so maybe I'm been overly pessimistic, but some choice entries that I very seriously doubt don't track you: Dailymotion, Wordpress, Dropbox, Skyscanner, Here.com... I could go on. Mapbox for example definitely track you, but do provide an opt-out in their API, so some would describe that as "more" privacy friendly. Others may do similar.

This seems more like a list of alternatives to Google (which is still incredibly valuable), rather than a list of privacy-friendly alternatives.

That's still great though: I'm still happier to have some choice in who tracks me even if all alternatives do.

New comment by hjek in "Show HN: You Don't Need WordPress – Create a Blog With Only Google Docs"

There are free/libre simple markdown editors[0] available that have the buttons and keybindings more similar to Word. Additionally, collaborative editors like Etherpad[1] don't use markdown either (and btw, neither does WP, of course) and will be entirely familiar to non-technical people.

> Basically, I'm trying to make as little friction as possible to getting the document complete.

I can see how it may be more frictionless for you to use Google Docs, and how this may be less work for you than for example installing and running your own Etherpad. But I think it's too grand a statement to say that "You Don't Need Wordpress" because people that don't want to give up their online freedom still do.

Maybe that's what's upsetting people about this project, it's grandiose title that's dismissing another successful free blogging platform? While I fell kinda bad about defending anything PHP, WordPress does have a lot of extensions and your solution couldn't replace WooCommerce or WPForms.

Ask HN: How do you decide when you've done enough work for the day?
80 by zzaip | 36 comments on Hacker News.
I'm a relatively junior software engineer, a little over a year out from university, with a cushy remote job working for big-co. And I never know how much work to do on a given day. Right now, my daily rule of thumb is to try to have my butt in the seat for ~8 hours. I clock out at 6 and stay disciplined so I don't end up overworking as many remoters do. The main disadvantage of this strategy is that it just doesn't align with the reality of the job. Some days I work on something complex and want to work more hours, while others I'll knock out a few small things and want to call it early. Strategies I'd like to use but can't: - Show up and leave with my coworkers. We're a remote team, and have a few serious workaholics on the team (not to mention the issue of timezones). - Leave when I've done my tasks. This might work if we had actual sprints. Our reality is an endless stream bugs and features for us to work on before we launch our product, and we just grab tickets as they come. Hopefully this improves after launch. What do you do? I want to do enough work to feel good about myself, without burning out. I have very little supervision from management, my coworkers seem to respect and like me, and I am generally productive. Help me, HN.

New comment by rorygibson in "Show HN: Trolley lets you take payments from your static site"

Hey,

Trolley actually uses Checkout in the UI, so we don't compete directly.

What Trolley gives you is - you don't need a server!

If you use Checkout yourself, adding the widget to your front end is really easy - but you also need to provide some code in the backend that processes your form submission and then does the token exchange with Stripe to actually make the charge on the customer's account.

That means you either need to be on some kind of all-in-one e-commerce suite, use WordPress and some plugins (and either host it yourself or pay someone to) or build and run some infrastructure of your own (heroku, DO, EC2, maybe FaaS if that's your thing)

Think of Trolley as a Stripe backend-as-a-service with a useful UI feature :-)

Ask HN: How can I find someone to collaborate on hardware?

I'm a physician and I'm working on a hardware idea. How can I find someone I can talk to about this? I don't live in a great tech hub, so I'm thinking it'll be an online/phone/virtual collaboration AND I can pay for it if they just want to be employed/freelance for a job.

YouTube now suggesting independent information on misinformation videos

As has been noted in many places, Youtube some time ago began marking Voice of America, RT News, BBC, teleSUR etc. as government funded broadcast mediums.

I just noticed something on Youtube now, although in my research it seems to have been going on since at least early August, that Youtube is now linking to "authoritative" sources for some topical subjects. If you look to see why you get this click on "Why am I seeing this?" it links here - https://ift.tt/2xURnhc . That page says "Note: This feature is currently available only in the United States."

Here are searches that make it pop up on Youtube (sometimes it does not pop up until you click on the video):

  space landing hoax
  global warming hoax
  holocaust hoax
  aids hiv hoax
  sandy hook hoax

Wondering what other phrases make this pop up?
