Ask HN: Tesla electric cars: is the business in the battery
Noticing that Tesla dropped the swappable battery model with a very weak argument (lots of administrative paperwork), and sealing the battery in like Apple (and others) does with their iPhones, a friend of mine stated that in his opinion the real business is in the battery. Considering that having a swappable battery would resolve the main inconvenience of an electric car, which, in my opinion, is the charging time, dismissing so lightly the swappable option seems odd. What does HN think? Can the total control of the batteries be the real business in electric cars? Thank you

This is anecdotal but I decided to host my own sites. I bought the cheapest droplet from digital ocean that I could and I set it up running Fedora. Then I installed Apache, MySQL and PHP so I could run some wordpress sites.
The server kept running out of memory and shutting down MySQL so my sites stopped working. I started to learn how to read logs and saw that there is a huge amount of malicious activity directed at my server all the time.
Yesterday I installed Fail2ban which meant installing postfix. I got it working (took most of the day) but I can't send emails to my gmail account because I need to set up dkim and dmarc and other stuff. I have a list. But first I have to learn how to do all this stuff.
I use Fedora every day at work but I'm obviously no sysadmin and you are so right. All this takes hours and hours to learn and then to stay on top of it. When I was on shared hosting I had a lot less control and options but it was a lot easier as well.

But reading through the post and the comments here, I'm sensing an omission. What Twitter (and social media in general) provides that RSS doesn't is interaction. I don't login to twitter all that often, but when I do, I see things like this: https://twitter.com/mikekarnj/status/1106582308235235330 and this: https://twitter.com/lpolovets/status/1106812630985928704
I doubt I'd be privy to the discussions happening on Twitter if they were happening any other way (blogs tried to do it with comments and pingbacks, but that isn't as good as Twitter, and not as open to everyone, since you have to run a blog of your own).
This is the secret sauce for me. In fact, if there were a way to only see conversations in Twitter (and ignore all the posts with no responses) that would have a lot of value for me.
RSS is great for reading, but for conversing, it's not a good fit.

I don't get why everyone keeps saying this. Is it because of WordPress? In 2005 I used my own MVC framework with ORM and stuff. It was written in PHP. My pages had the usual generation time of 0.03 seconds. And that was with no specialized caching or any crazy optimizations. Even with no AJAX, page loading seemed instant, unless you connected to the server from across the world.

This is it. Not only were web developers much more "bothered" with putting actual effort into trying to produce a considered product in the past, they did so without the tooling we take for granted today.
Half the projects I've worked on recently use contexualised i18n wrappers to process and output strings, or an equivalent custom generic React component, or similar. How simple would it be to add `lang=""` support to such a workflow, compared to what would have been involved in doing this 10 years ago (I'm aware this might seem exaggeration as 10+ years ago we still had similar stuff with gettext, et al—still used today by even Wordpress—but I'm more talking about recent changes to tooling-oriented frontend web development, which should in theory have made this type of stuff a lot easier).
