From talking to a friend recently, I realized that I'm overly pessimistic about my ability to be helpful to other people.
To fix this, they said they wouldn't mind filling out a feedback form after conversations to give me a more accurate understanding of how helpful I've been. After they suggested this, I realized that I could make use of this more frequently in all conversations I'm involved in.
I don't want it to be a pain for people to fill out so I'm trying to figure out what the fastest to fill out form I could share would be.
I could probably use google forms or survey monkey but I'm wondering if there are better solutions for what I'm looking for.

Thinking about it, enclosed spaces where you breathe other people's air for extended periods of time are an optimal way to spread germs and get folks sick. From this perspective, the trendy fishbowl rooms now seem entirely horrifying.
What can be done about this? Do we need something along the lines of hyper-ventilated office zones to stay safe in the future? Or will it always be just the cost of doing business?

Some good friends of mine just launched an open beta of their upcoming software project, called Jamwerks Lola, that makes it easy to collaborate with other musicians over the internet. It's also fantastic for group audio calls. While latency can still be an issue, this is much better than the experience I get with Zoom and my drum instructor. Mac-only for now, but PC coming soon.

Hi everyone. I don't normally ask career advice of people I don't know, but I respect this community, so here goes.
I'm a software engineer with about 20 years of experience. I've worked in large and small orgs; on a website/service with 100-500 million monthly active users, and another with 10-50m MAUs; and on Big Science. I work mainly in distributed systems, and have branched out to database implementation in the past 5 years. I really love distsys.
The main economic forces that I currently see operating on my career are: (a) the ascendance of the small handful of cloud computing providers; and (b) the remaking of many facets of the economy by AI, much of this to take place in the coming decades.
On (a): I'm happy in my current job, but have found that only companies at the largest scale want to pursue the distsys approaches that I'm most interested in (e.g., gossip/CRDTs, consensus algorithms, etc.). Outside of those companies, it's difficult to get funded for anything besides, for example, leader election, or adopting a 3rd party distributed data store or cache.
OK, so on to my question... Should I:
(1) Stay where I am. (I'm lucky to work on something that I enjoy, even if it's not an exact match.) (In other words: don't worry about your 1st world problems.)
(2) Try to find distsys work at one of those large cloud computing providers.
(3) Branch out into another area, e.g., distributed machine learning, or data/compute management/scheduling systems for AI.
(4) Something else I haven't thought of.
What do you think?
I'm stuck in thinking about what to work on. Thanks in advance for your help!

I am in the middle of a job application process. I have passed the technical assignment and now I have a technical interview with the CTO of the company. I am positive that I will get this position.
The problem is during my first interview with the talent acquisition specialist, I told her my salary expectation was $30/Hours. But today I looked at the job posting on stackoverflow and the salary range on the posting was $100k - 150k which makes it roughly $52/h - $78/h given you put 160 productive hours monthly.
I feel like I pitched too low, I want to have my compensation between 52-78 bracket but not sure how to deal with this now. I don't want to sound unprofessional but want to renegotiate my original pitch. Can someone guide me on how to tackle this professionally?
P.S The company is US-based with a development team spread all across the globe. I am front South Asia and even $30/h is a very big deal.

How are US companies allwoed to req. phone numbers? Such as Facebook and Twitter and Instagram for registration? Doesn't this violate anti-discrimination laws because the poor and disabled are disproportionally affected, who may be unable to either get a phone or afford one. There are people who even have a lot of money who either find getting a phone difficult or unable to get one. I am surprised there have been zero lawsuits or legal cases regarding this.

I have original yubikeys, nanos, bluetooth, and usb-c keys. I currently keep them in a pencil case along with all my dongles, and I usually have to guess which one goes to what. Key labels? Sure, except I also tend to leave one in each laptop ... N organizations => N VPNs => N yubikeys, plus M personal accounts, plus not everything has transitioned from USB-A to USB-C, so in some cases I have more than one for an org. /sigh.
Any suggestions? Google Shopping, Amazon, and Yubico are not terribly helpful here.

Does anyone else think that the comment voting system makes it too easy to to downvote for disagreement? I know this is a common complaint but I have have found a solution to the tendency of people to down-vote out of disagreement more often than to up-vote for approval/agreeement. Another problem is that for controversial topics, having an unpopular view may mean getting a lot of downvotes. One solution is to weigh downvotes by only 2/3 the value of upvotes. So getting three downvotes on a comment would only result in 2 karma lost instead of 3. Hey HN,
Some context to my question:
I'm working on a monitoring service that currently supports uptime and page speed monitoring.
It originally started in 2018 as an idea to monitor GraphQL queries for correctness, but that idea didn't take off, and I pivoted to page speed, and later uptime.
I did a quick rewrite (https://ift.tt/30gR4vT) a few months ago, tapped my professional network for anyone that'd be interested, and managed to get my first sale.
I noticed most of the "no" responses I got ended up using more established solutions in the space - so probably weren't the early-adopters I was looking for.
Do people tend to go deeper into their professional networks to find early adopters, or is there something I'm missing here?

Not sure if all of you guys have seen it but I've been experiencing this over the entire decade. The GPS marker on the map isn't updated, the direction pointed is wrong, and there are always random jumps in the app. Why does it suck so bad and how to get around it?

I am curious to know what Python ends up being used for by Python freelancers. I know what it is used for in a full time role but i can only imagine what are the typical use cases for Python for gig workers, i.e short-term, temporary, one-off tasks.
I want to imagine maybe automation would be popular. What kind of automation though? In full time or recurrent roles, it's be maybe test automation and devops but do such opportunities exist in the gig economy? I can't see such tasks being outsourced in most orgs. I could be wrong.
On to web development. Is Flask really a popular tool for freelancers? I'd imagine people using JS, React WordPress, SquareSpace before going the Python way. Or maybe Django? API development, I see a lot of people defaulting to JS and Golang etc.
Scientific computing, is that even popular in the gig economy?
It would seem to me, again I could be wrong, that the gigs that end up using python a lot would be some sort of data scraping, aggregation and maybe cleaning. That's where I think it is a clear cut first choice in a somewhat popular gig economy task.
I have no idea about Python in the crypto space and whether crypto is even a popular gig field.
I guess the summary question is, what common areas of the gig economy is Python popular and lucrative?
