Ask HN: Client side encryption for emails like 1Password

I really love 1Password and was wondering if there is a similar model which exists for emails, which would have following attributes: 1. Allow client side encrypted backups to cloud. 2. Local backups using TimeMachine backups. 3. iOS and Mac clients which would allow view and search.

I know that 1Password has some document encryption support - but it isn't very usable right now. Essentially I am looking for a client side encrypted version of Gmail.

Protonmail is probably something which fits this criteria. It been reliable?
