Ask HN: How do you track your time working on your project/company?

This isn't an underhanded request to validate an audience for a time tracker app.

I have spent incredible number of hours on certain aspects of what Im working on, but I don't think I can completely justify some of the time. I would love to know I spent X period on Y, and then know that if I go over Z period, when I will cut the effort short.

How do you track these things? Or is it even worth it?
